Fire at Odesa Geriatric Home: 3 Dead, 17 Rescued in Tragedy

A large-scale fire broke out in a geriatric boarding house in the Berezovsky district of Odesa region. Three people died and 17 others were rescued.

According to the press service of the regional National Police, the fire broke out in a one-story building on February 11 at about 21:00.

Rescuers, law enforcement officers, and forensic experts immediately began working at the scene.

According to the State Emergency Service, the fire broke out in a geriatric boarding house in the village of Maligonove. The fire covered an area of 100 square meters, and although rescuers managed to eliminate it, the tragedy could not be avoided - the bodies of three people were found during the extinguishing.

Even before the firefighters arrived, 17 people were evacuated from the building, six of whom were hospitalized due to combustion product poisoning. All the victims, as well as other evacuees, received the necessary medical care.

Psychologists of the State Emergency Service worked at the scene and provided support to ten people.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Five units of equipment and 20 rescuers, as well as one unit of equipment and one community representative were involved in the firefighting.

Information was registered in the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Part 2 of Art. 270 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The full circumstances of the incident are being established within the framework of the criminal proceedings.
