A former Ukrainian police officer who voluntarily joined the Russian occupation forces during the occupation of Kherson was put in the dock. For treason and collaboration with the enemy, the man was sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

This became known from the verdict of the Desnianskyi District Court of Chernihiv.

According to the investigation, the convict held the position of a police driver at the Police Department No. 2 of the Kherson District Department of the National Police. After the start of Russia's full-scale invasion and occupation of part of the Kherson region, he broke his oath, voluntarily stayed in occupied Kherson and joined the illegal "Main Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kherson Region" created by the occupiers.

The man held various positions in the illegal law enforcement agency, including a driver and a staff officer. He contributed to the functioning of the occupation administration and carried out orders from Russian security forces.

One of the witnesses told the court that in April 2022 he noticed the defendant in Kherson. According to him, he offered him to join the occupation Ministry of Internal Affairs. Another witness claimed to have seen him in a Russian police uniform.

The court found the man guilty under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 2 of Article 111 (high treason) and Part 7 of Article 111-1 (voluntary occupation of positions in illegal bodies in the occupied territory). In addition to imprisonment, he is banned from holding positions in law enforcement agencies of Ukraine for 12 years and stripped of his special rank of "senior police sergeant".

Recently, the court sentenced two collaborators from Kherson region to 15 years in prison for working for the Russians, but so far in absence. After the Russian occupation, they voluntarily joined the ranks of the so-called "Russian police" in Oleshky. The men supported the invaders and became part of the occupation "law enforcement agency".

The court also sentenced a former police major from the Kherson region who voluntarily sided with the Russians.
