Russian authorities will try a resident of Genichesk on the TOT in Kherson region. The 51-year-old man is accused of participating in a so-called "illegal armed group."

This was reported by the online edition "MOST".

The "armed formation" refers to the Crimean Tatar Volunteer Battalion named after Noman Chelebidzhikhan, which is classified by the Russians as a terrorist organization whose activities are prohibited by current Russian legislation.

According to the official version of the Russian-controlled TOT prosecutor's office in Kherson region, the defendant joined the battalion in 2016. While serving in its ranks, the man allegedly took an active part in the organization's anti-Russian activities. In particular, according to the prosecution, the defendant "performed functional duties to ensure its (the battalion's - V.T.) activities related to the transportation of participants from their place of residence to the battalion camp and back, as well as the supply of food."

Russian prosecutors accuse the man of not voluntarily leaving the ranks of the terrorist organization, despite the fact that he had the opportunity to do so.

The case will be considered by the Genichesk District Court established by the occupation authorities. The defendant is likely to face imprisonment for up to 10 years.

The Noman Chelebidzhikhan Battalion was established in early 2016. It was named in honor of the first head of the government of the Crimean People's Republic, formed in November 1917. The battalion participated on the Ukrainian side in the armed conflict in Donbas. On June 1, 2022, the Russian authorities classified it as a terrorist organization.

Recently, we wrote about Crimean Tatar journalist and human rights activist Lutfiya Zudieva, who is challenging her inclusion in the register of foreign agents.
