Police officers in the Odessa region detained the head of the military service security department at a military unit on suspicion of attempting, in exchange for money, to remove a person who had violated military registration rules from the wanted list.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odesa region.

Police documented how the official offered his services to a man who was wanted by the Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support for violating military registration rules. The military official demanded a monetary reward from the client for helping to remove him from the wanted list by influencing the right people at the recruitment center, and also promised to fictitiously employ him in a military unit under his control without requiring him to serve. This scheme allowed the prospective soldier not only to avoid being assigned to combat units but also to continue going about his civilian affairs undisturbed.

After the official received the agreed-upon sum of an illegal benefit in the amount of $6,000, he was detained and charged with receiving an illegal benefit for himself by influencing the decision-making of a person authorized to perform state functions, combined with the extortion of such a benefit. The court ordered pretrial detention for the suspect, with the right to post bail in the amount of 2,998,400 hryvnias.

If found guilty, the military officer faces imprisonment for a term of three to eight years with confiscation of property.

Earlier in Odesa, a court dismissed a case against the director of a private company who had paid for assistance in obtaining government contracts for several years. After pleading guilty, he turned to law enforcement and helped expose the official who had been receiving kickbacks.
