A man who defected to the occupiers in Kherson in 2022 and became an investigator for the occupation police was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison. According to the case file, he voluntarily began working for the enemy.
This is stated in the verdict of the Kherson City Court.
The court also ordered the confiscation of his property. The verdict may be appealed within 30 days.
According to the case file, the defendant did not support the Ukrainian government and wanted the occupied territories to become part of Russia. Therefore, in the spring of 2022, he agreed to work for the occupiers. In August of that year, he became an investigator with the so-called Russian police in Kherson.
Documents from the occupying police helped prove this. They were found on flash drives after the city was liberated. Among the documents found were an order appointing him and lists of employees. There are also his reports regarding the issuance of a Russian passport. The USB drive containing the documents was found during a search of a woman who, during the occupation, served as the deputy head of personnel for that agency. The USB drive contained a total of 268 files.
Witnesses told the court that they had seen the defendant wearing a Russian uniform and carrying a pistol. One of them reported that the man had urged him to go work for the occupiers as well and promised a good salary. Another witness identified him as the investigator who had handled the case involving the theft of his car.
