An exhibition on the city's Ottoman era has opened in Izmail

At the Izmail Military History Museum Complex, a new exhibition titled “On the Borders of the Port: The History of Ottoman Izmail” was opened to mark the 436th anniversary of the city’s founding. It features unique artifacts from the 16th through 19th centuries.

This was announced by Andriy Abramchenko, mayor of Izmail.

Among the exhibits on display are Ukraine’s only Turkish mace, a scepter, 18th-century battle flags of the Ottoman Empire, a kettledrum, a mortar shell, and a collection of Ottoman weapons. The first hall also features a portrait of former Mayor Ivan Avraamov, painted by Serhii Denysov, an artist at the Izmail Military-Historical Museum Complex.

The second hall features materials on the construction of the Izmail Fortress and its role as a strategic outpost on the borders of the Ottoman Empire. The third hall presents the reconstruction of the fortress by Turkish military engineers following the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1791, subsequent Russian expansion along the Danube, and the events that led to the destruction of the Izmail Fortress in 1856. 

A separate section is dedicated to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, which finally brought the Ottoman era in the city’s history to an end.

The exhibition reveals the city’s multiracial and multicultural heritage beyond the confines of imperial myths. The first guided tour led by the curator has already taken place.
