An exhibition by Odessa-based art critic Uta Kilter has opened in Kyiv

<span><span><span><span><span><span>An exhibition dedicated to Uta Kilter, an art critic, performer, and cultural figure from Odesa, has opened at the "Khlibzavod" exhibition space in Kyiv. The goal of the event was to draw attention to the artist and to raise funds to support her following a long period of medical treatment.</span></span></span></span></span></span>

<span><span><span><span><span><span>Uta Kilter is considered a key figure in the art scene of the 1990s and 2000s. Her professional work spans two fields: art criticism and performance art, including acting. However, as noted by Odessa-based art historian and researcher Anna Aliyeva, these areas have always been closely intertwined in Uta’s life. </span></span></span></span></span></span>

<span><span><span><span><span><span>For the exhibition, curators Amina AhmedandYevgen Valyuk, together with Anna Anufrieva, created a viewing space featuring book mezzanines that mimic similar shelves from the library in Uta’s home. The space is filled with objects whose symbolic meanings highlight key moments in the artist’s creative biography. </span></span></span></span></span></span>

<span><span><span><span><span><span>In particular, a model of a sculpture of Nefertiti’s head, as interpreted by Uta, symbolizes sacred knowledge. Childhood photos and objects from her Odessa home gradually reveal the theme of Odessa’s cultural power. </span></span></span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The choice of lilac and red for the room is significant. Objects of a certain color remain within spaces of a certain color—and this creates the conditions for the totality of color to be recreated within the space. </span></span></span></span></span></span>

<span><span><span><span><span><span> Uta Kilter’s video archive includes hundreds of reports spanning the 1990s and 2000s. It serves as a living and consistent documentation of the Ukrainian art scene. For many years, Kilter’s reports were broadcast on her own TV program about art, “Uta’s Situation.” At the exhibition at “Khlibzavod,” visitors can watch several reports from different years in one of the rooms. </span></span></span></span></span></span>

<span><span><span><span><span><span>Uta Kilter was also one of Kira Muratova’s leading actresses and appeared in such films as “The Eternal Return,” “Melody for a Barrel Organ,” “The Tuner,” “Chekhovian Motifs,” “Secondary Characters,” “Letter to America,” “The Sensitive Policeman,” and others. </span></span></span></span></span></span>

Earlier, Odessa hosted the exhibition“Ode to Sonia,” dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the artist Sonia Delaunay, who was born in Odessa. The exhibition featured reimagined patterns and rhythms in plates and vases, experiments with textiles and simultaneous prints, and neon posters.
