In the Kherson region, an indictment has been filed against a 23-year-old Russian soldier accused of cruel treatment of civilians and violations of the laws and customs of war.

This was reported by the Kherson Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, in June 2022, a rifleman from one of the regiments of the Russian National Guard was stationed in occupied Kherson and was responsible for detaining a local resident in a seized temporary detention facility.

On June 14, the occupiers detained the man at a checkpoint near the Antonivsky Bridge while he was driving. According to the Russian military, his last name was on a list of individuals subject to arrest. The man was unlawfully held in the detention center for five days.

According to the investigation, the defendant escorted the detainee daily to interrogations and used physical force against him. The man was demanded to provide information about his ties to Ukrainian security forces, the locations of weapons caches, and the possible transmission of data on the movement routes of Russian troops.

When the detainee failed to provide the desired answers, the soldier, according to the investigation, beat him with a rubber baton and tortured him with a stun gun until he lost consciousness.

The victim was also held in unsanitary conditions and deprived of food, hygiene supplies, and the ability to attend to his sanitary needs. Due to the delay in receiving medical care, the man lost his hearing.

The Russian soldier is charged under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The indictment has been submitted to the court.
