A Russian citizen was taken into custody following a fatal traffic accident on the Odesa-Mykolaiv highway

In Mykolaiv, a court remanded a 64-year-old Russian citizen into custody on suspicion of causing a fatal traffic accident on the Odesa-Mykolaiv highway. The accident occurred on August 9 and resulted in fatalities.

This was reported by the Central District Court of Mykolaiv.

According to the investigation, the man was driving a Volvo truck on Highway M-14 “Odesa-Melitopol-Novoazovsk” in the direction of Mykolaiv. Near the village of Polovinky, he veered into the oncoming lane and collided with a Setra bus.

After that, the truck collided with a Ford Bronco Sport that was traveling behind the bus. The SUV driver sustained serious injuries and died in the hospital that same day.

The man was charged under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of traffic rules resulting in the death of a person.

The prosecutor requested that the driver be remanded in custody, as she believed he might flee from the investigation and trial.

The defense attorney objected. He noted that his client, despite being a Russian citizen, has lived in Ukraine since 2009, has a registered place of residence here, and has social ties, so he has no intention of absconding.

The suspect himself admitted guilt but said he did not remember the circumstances of the accident.

The court decided to remand the man in custody. At the same time, bail was set at 99,840 hryvnias.

Earlier, Intent reported that the accident occurred on the night of August 9. At that time, three people were reported dead and eight injured. According to preliminary data, the driver of a cargo van traveling toward Mykolaiv veered into the oncoming lane and collided with two minibuses.
