A Fire That Will Never Go Out: How Azov Keeps the Memory of Its Brothers Alive

Military culture is not based solely on regulations or battle signals. Its true core lies in the memory of those who gave their lives for the country’s freedom and in unconditional respect for their service. On the night of July 29, the unit’s soldiers and recruits held a special ceremony. The ritual was dedicated to those who died in the terrorist attack in Olenivka and to all the soldiers who perished in Russian torture chambers. Our tribute united the entire 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine —from battle-hardened veterans to new recruits—in a single formation.

The nighttime ceremony brought together soldiers from the Personnel Training Battalion and experienced warriors. Each person present remembered the fallen by name, after which the soldiers ran through the night forest carrying burning torches.

The following details underscore the ritual’s special significance:

• The event was traditionally organized by the Horunzhya Service, which is responsible for the unit’s morale and traditions;
• Senior Lieutenant Vladislav “Docent” Dutchak noted that over the past year, three more comrades had died in Russian torture chambers, and the memory of each of them lives on in the hearts of the fighters;
• The burning torches held by the new recruits have become a symbol of continuity and a promise of certain vengeance for every fallen comrade;
• The ritual instills in the young soldiers’ minds the understanding that the unit never forgets its own.

The development of military ethics begins from the very first days of the training course. The ensign corps ensures that every recruit recognizes the value of brotherhood, feels a connection to previous generations of defenders, and understands the responsibility for their unit’s flag.

Respect for heroic deeds and deep-rooted traditions set the unit apart. It is precisely thanks to this systematic approach to training and brotherhood that the Azov Corps emerges victorious in battles with minimal losses.

Honoring the fallen is not just a formal date on the calendar, but an inner need for every soldier. It serves as a reminder of exactly what the daily, grueling struggle on the front lines is all about.

When a soldier feels the support of the entire unit behind him and the memory of the fallen heroes, he acts more boldly and with greater composure even in the most difficult conditions.
