In the Ovidiopol District of the Odesa Region, a doctor who ignored a pregnant woman’s test results and failed to prescribe appropriate treatment was sentenced to three years of probation. As a result, a few hours after giving birth, the newborn died from an intrauterine infection.

This is confirmed by the verdict in the Unified State Register of Court Decisions.

Dr. Viktoria Byshlyaga was providing medical care to the pregnant patient. According to information from the victim’s medical record, during prenatal monitoring, test results repeatedly indicated premature placental maturation, anemia, placental hypertrophy, and leukocytosis in smears and urine. The pregnant woman’s symptoms were directly causally linked to the fetus’s infection during the intrauterine period. However, the doctor ignored this and failed to take appropriate measures.

The baby was born alive, but five hours after delivery, the baby’s condition deteriorated. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the infant died. The infant’s death resulted from an intrauterine infection leading to the development of combined lung damage, intrauterine interstitial pneumonia, aspiration of infected amniotic fluid, and respiratory distress syndrome with a pronounced hemorrhagic component.

Earlier in Odesa, doctors were fined for trafficking in disability certifications. Between November 2025 and January 2026, a doctor received $6,600 in installments from a man, while his accomplice received $6,400. At the same time, the doctor received $8,000 from another man for similar services—influencing members of the expert panel and securing a disability classification.
