With the help of France, a new system for diagnosing malfunctions of plant systems using artificial intelligence will be installed at the South Ukrainian NPP. Such systems will also be installed at two more nuclear power plants in Ukraine.

This was reported by the Center for Public Investigations with reference to the Dream ecosystem.

It is planned to implement a project to diagnose and improve the efficiency of Ukrainian nuclear power plants using Metroscope technology. The goal of the project is to increase the productivity of nuclear power plants.

The project, proposed by Metroscope, a subsidiary of EDF (France), is aimed at improving the performance and reliability of not only the South Ukrainian NPP, but also the Rivne and Khmelnytsky NPPs operated by Energoatom.

The proposed system includes a module for efficiency diagnostics that assesses the physical condition of the plant using thermodynamic models, which allows optimizing the energy efficiency of nuclear power plants.

In addition, the system has an anomaly detection module that allows for early detection of mechanical faults and sensor failures using machine learning models, which ensures equipment reliability.

Using historical and current data, Metroscope can predict potential problems before they occur, reducing unplanned downtime and maintenance costs.

The estimated budget of the project is UAH 392 million 189 thousand. The duration of the project is 12 months. The project is currently in the implementation status of October 2024.

The project was initiated by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and implemented by Metroscope, a software development company.

Recently, a construction contract for the South Ukrainian NPP was signed without a competitive procedure and with a company with a dubious past. The deal was worth more than UAH 2 billion. In 2022, the company was accused of misappropriating budget funds for services for the South Ukrainian NPP as well. It is planned to carry out construction work and maintenance, including engineering protection of the plant.

In October, experts analyzed the measures taken by Energoatom and Ukrhydroenergo to prevent blackouts, including the construction of protective structures for key energy infrastructure facilities. The total value of orders for the protection of the South Ukrainian NPP amounted to UAH 140 million.
